Johann Abrahams is an award-winning journalist and filmmaker whose current affairs stories have made local and international headlines.
He has a broadcasting and film degree from the University of Kansas in the USA, and has a Master’s degree from UCT in Media, Theory and Practice. .
After working for KSNT in Topeka, Kansas as a video journalist (1993 -1994) he returned to South Africa joining the SABC, Cape Town office, where he worked as a news cameraman and reporter to be promoted Executive producer of an investigative journalism programme, Special Assignment, which aired on SABC3.
Leaving SABC in 2011 he became a freelancer and continued to produce documentaries, wrote several screenplays, directed crime docudramas and corporate videos.
Johann worked as senior producer for Moja Media setting up a BRICS TV Channel as well as Roots TV aimed at South Africa’s indigenous communities. There he honed his skills as a director of live television events and talk-shows.
In 2023 he directed the popular Jazz-on-the-Rocks concert and a documentary on Black rugby history with the title, Pinkie the Oval Hero. The feature film Benigna, written by him, is due for production in 2024. His ground-breaking, directed historical 7-part documentary series, The Khoekhoe Saga, was recently screened on SABC2.
As a lecturer at Cape Peninsula University of Technology, CPUT Film Department, he teaches cinematography, directing and screenwriting.
